At the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech, several swim teams from the Athens area distinguished themselves Saturday at the GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championships.
North Oconee recorded the best finish locally, with the boys and girls both coming in sixth place in the Class 4A-5A division.
The North Oconee boys scored 200 points (St. Pius X won with 333 points), with Clarke Central finishing eighth with 180 points and Oconee County coming in ninth place with 162 points. Jefferson was 17th with 60 points.
The North Oconee girls finished sixth with 171 points (Blessed Trinity won with 332 points) and Jefferson’s girls finished seventh with 169 points. Oconee County finished 19th with 47 points, Madison County was 20th with 41 points and Clarke Central was 24th with 28 points.
In the girls Class A-3A division, Commerce finished 10th with 132 points; Westminster won the division with 358 points. In the boys division, Prince Avenue Christian finished 17th with 56 points and Athens Academy was 31st with 14 points.
There were also four individual state titlists from the area. North Oconee’s Charlie Logan won the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 35.21 seconds while Titan Karen Zhao won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.69, both in Class 4A-5A.
Oconee County’s Adam Brooks won the 1-meter diving in Class 4A-5A with 465.35 points and his Warriors teammate Allen Mann finished second at 445.55. Prince Avenue Christian’s John Morgan McDonald won the Class 1A-3A 500 freestyle in 4:42.71.
North Oconee’s top-10 finishers in 4A and 5A for boys included the 200 freestyle relay team (second place, Charlie Logan, Coletti, Craig Kennedy, David Mustard, 1:29.45), the 200 medley relay team (ninth place, Dhruv Prakash, Samuel Ash, Colton Evans, Keaton Coletti, 1:42.48) and 400 freestyle relay team (sixth place, Henry Logan, Kennedy, Mustard, Charlie Logan) and Charlie Logan (second place, 200 freestyle, sixth place, 500 freestyle, 4:57.24).
Top-10 finishes for North Oconee’s girls in 4A and 5A included Zhao (second, 100 freestyle, 52.64), Brynn Halbach (ninth, 500 freestyle, 5:26.72), the 200 freestyle relay team (third place, Halbach, Piper Cyterski, Abigail Weimer, Zhao, 1:41.65) and the 400 freestyle relay team (fifth place, Halbach, Siya Kannan, Felicia Pursner, Zhao, 3:43.54).
Jefferson’s girls had top-10 finishes in 1-meter diving (second place, Kelly Addison, 472.35), the 200 freestyle (ninth place, Janie Davis, 2:00.35), the 200 medley relay (ninth place, McKenzie Klinck, Jessie Pritchett, Davis, Sara McMullan, 1:52.79), the 100 butterfly (fifth place, Klinck, 58.22, 10th place, Haley Bartoletta, 1:00.42) the 500 freestyle (eighth place, Davis, 5:21.37), the 100 backstroke (ninth place, Klinck, 1:00.41), and the 200 freestyle relay (sixth place, Bartoletta, McMullan, Davis, Klinck, 1:42.15).
The Jefferson boys’ top-10 finishers included the 200 freestyle (third place, Jackson Harvin, 1:40.69) and the 500 freestyle (10th place, William Guzman, 5:01.47).
Besides Brooks and Mann, Oconee County’s boys recorded top-10 finishes in the 50 freestyle (third place, Tucker Schroer, 21.52), the 100 freestyle (fifth place, Tucker Schroer, 48.58), the 200 medley relay (ninth place, Eli Searcy, Ben Gaffney, Tanner Schroer, Tucker Schroer, 1:41.31), and the 200 freestyle relay (fifth place, Tanner Schroer, Gaffney, Searcy, Tucker Schroer, 1:30.75).
Top-10 finishes for the Oconee County girls included the 200 freestyle (sixth place, Erin Osborne, 1:59.91) and the 500 freestyle (seventh place, Osborne, 5:19.18).
The Clarke Central boys’ top-10 finishers were the 200 medley relay team (sixth place, Caedmon Churchwell, Owen Churchwell, Brendan Bowman, Gunnar Churchwell, 1:41.31), the 200 IM (Caedmon Churchwell, 2:00.19), the 50 freestyle (10th place, Bowman, 22.73), the 100 freestyle (second place, Owen Churchwell, 46.61), the 500 freestyle (eighth place, Will Foggin, 4:59.40), the 100 backstroke (ninth place, Caedmon Churchwell, 55.29), the 100 breaststroke (second, Owen Churchwell, 57.79) and the 400 freestyle relay (third place, Caedmon Churchwell, Foggin, Bowman, Owen Churchwell, 3:17.82).
Top-10 finishes for Clarke Central’s girls included the 100 freestyle (10th place, Lucy Yeomans, 54.63).
The Commerce girls recorded top-10 finishes in Class 1A-3A in the 200 medley relay (fifth, Samantha Davidson, Jessie Pritchett, Kate Massey, Kyla McCook, 1:55.75), the 200 IM (sixth place, Massey, 2:15.53), the 50 freestyle (ninth place, Davidson, 24.92), the 100 butterfly (fifth place, Massey, 1:00.37) and the 200 freestyle relay (eighth place, Massey, McCook, Pritchett, Davidson, 1:46.60)
Athens Academy’s Eli Condie finished ninth in the Class 1A-3A boys 100 backstroke in 55.77 and Madison County’s Macy Mullis finished second in the 100 backstroke in 56.03 and seventh in the 50 freestyle at 24.30.
