With the region and state playoffs right around the corner, the Jefferson boys basketball team is heating up at just the right time.

Winners in 14 of their last 16 games, the Dragons come into the final week of the regular season at 16-7 overall and 7-1 in Region 8-4A. Jefferson has clinched second place in the region and will have favorable seeding for next week’s tournament.

Last week, the Dragons won three games, defeating Stephens County 75-72 on Monday, besting North Oconee 57-23 on Tuesday and beating Oconee County 61-57 on Friday.

The 6-foot-2 Gibson – whose father Jason coaches the Dragons girls basketball team and also played at Jefferson – is averaging 19.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Coached by Kevin Morris in his first season at the helm after a long stint at Apalachee, Jefferson was set to face St. Pius X (ranked No. 2 in Class 4A) on Tuesday and will close out the regular season Friday at Stephens County.
