The Oconee County Warriors won the Region 8-AAAA championship on Thursday night with a 2-1 (5-3 in PKs) victory against St. Pius X.
It is the fourth straight region championship and 11th overall in program history.
Dillan Dickey gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 7:46 left in the first half but St. Pius tied the game with 35 seconds left in the first half.
After the second half went scoreless, the game went into two five-minute overtime periods and they went scoreless as well.
The Warriors had the first shot in penalty kicks and Chris Johnson buried it to give them a 1-0 lead. St. Pius scored on its opening PK to tie the game.
Ciaran Thompson shot second for the Warriors and he scored to give them a 2-1 lead, and goalkeeper Hunter Andrews helped the Warriors maintain the lead after making a save on the second shooter from St. Pius.
Thomas Murray, who had the assist on Dickey’s goal in the first half, was the third shooter for the Warriors and he scored to build a 3-1 lead, but St. Pius scored to cut the lead to 3-2.
Eduardo Benitez made it 4-for-4 for the Warriors to give them a 4-2 lead but St. Pius kept the game alive with a goal by its fourth shooter.
Dickey came up fifth for the Warriors with a chance to end the game with a goal, and he scored to make it 5-for-5 in PKs for the Warriors to start off the celebration.
The Warriors finished the region with a 5-0 record and they went 14-3-1 overall. St. Pius finished second in the region with a 4-1 region record.
The Warriors will open up the state tournament at home on Wednesday.
