Watkinsville child injured in attack by family’s bulldog

A 7-year-old Watkinsville girl survived a savage attack by the family’s dog on Saturday, according to a Watkinsville Police report.

The girl was transported by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and later released with at least 20 staples to her head, according to the report.

“The good news is all the injuries were to the back of the head and not to her face, but that was bad enough,” Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O’Dillon said Tuesday.

The attack occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on Concord Drive in Bishop’s Vineyard subdivision. Family members had to pull the dog off the child, according to the report.

“All the kids had been playing with it and for some reason it snapped,” O’Dillon said about the attack. The family had adopted the large American bulldog mix about a month earlier, he said.

Oconee County First Responders treated the girl prior to her being taken to the hospital, while Oconee County Animal Control responded and took possession of the dog.
