A teen from Marietta was critically injured Tuesday morning when he was struck by an SUV while walking on the Athens Perimeter, Athens-Clarke County police said.
Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, called the victim’s injuries “serious.” However, he said, the teen is expected to survive.
Police have not released the 18-year-old victim’s name.
The teen was walking on the highway’s inner loop from the area of College Station Road toward Oconee Street when struck at about 1:30 a.m.
Police were already in the area after receiving multiple calls from motorists reporting that someone was walking on the highway, police said.
An officer saw an SUV that was stopped in the left lane of the inner loop with its hazard lights on, and while approaching the vehicle the officer realized that it had struck a person.
Police said that the pedestrian had visible injuries to his head, torso and leg, but he was breathing. He was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
