A 30-year-old Athens man recently received a 20-year sentence for molesting a young girl.
Faced with three felony counts of child molestation, Justin Antonio Grimes, on Friday entered into a negotiated agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to one molestation count and to serve six years in prison and another 14 years on probation, according to documents filed in Clarke County Superior Court.
Grimes’ arrest and indictment stemmed from an investigation that began in December 2015, after a woman reported to Athens-Clarke County police that the 9-year-old girl confided in her that she was molested. A police report identified the girl as a student, but did not indicate whether she had a student-teacher relationship with the woman.
Police initially labeled the incident as a possible case of enticing a child for indecent purposes.
The case was subsequently referred to the Criminal Investigations Division, which works closely with the Family Protection Center to conduct forensic interviews with young sexual assault victims. Warrants for Grimes’ arrest were later obtained by a Sex Crimes Unit detective.
