The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has been awarded a federal grant for body cameras.
According to a release from police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez, the department received more than $56,000 from the U.S. Justice Department. Those funds combined with money from the Athens-Clarke County Commission will allow all 242 of the department’s authorized officers to be equipped with body cameras.
Athens police first used body cams in early 2014. Since that time, a total 187 camera units have been successfully deployed by the department’s Field Operations Division. Grant funds may be used for any part of the body camera program except for data storage costs, which can only be covered with matching program funds.
