Police say peeping Tom suspect’s alleged crimes date to 2013, used Uber job to target female UGA students

An alleged peeping Tom who was arrested two weeks ago for spying on a University of Georgia student at her home in Athens has been tied to 25 criminal cases dating to 2013, including four previous peeping Tom incidents, 16 burglaries and several thefts, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Police believe Patrick Joseph McElroy, 30, of Colbert used his job as an Uber driver to commit his more recent alleged crimes.

“It’s believed he would pick victims up at their house and later on go back and burglarize the residence, or look at (the victims) when they returned home,” said Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

The investigation that revealed the scope of McElroy’s alleged activities began early the morning of Sept. 29, when he was allegedly seen taking photographs of a 19-year-old UGA student through her bedroom window at Towne Club apartments in the 200 block of Springdale Street, police said.

He fled when he saw police arrive, but was discovered later hiding in the trunk of his car with a camera.

Following McElroy’s arrest, a detective went through the suspect’s phone and found photos and videos he took while spying on students at the Sigma Kappa sorority house on South Milledge Avenue, police said.

Police will not take out warrants charging McElroy with the additional crimes, but the entire case will be presented by the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office to a grand jury that will decide what offenses McElroy should be charged with, according to Rodriguez.

Detectives are having difficulty finding the owners of some of the stolen property they recovered during the investigation, Rodriguez said.

“Detectives believe that there are more victims and urge anyone who has been a victim of McElroy to contact the Athens-Clarke County Police Department,” the police spokesman said.
