Bowman woman found slain in home; murder suspect in South Carolina jail

Gregory Robert Roberts

Authorities in Elbert County are awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a Bowman woman found slain in her home early Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said the death of Ashley Marie Williams, 30, is a homicide and that the man who lived with her at 826 Beaver Run Extension is in the Anderson County (S.C.) Detention Center, where he is being held as a fugitive from justice.

A warrant charging the suspect, Gregory Robert Roberts, 47, with murder was obtained in Elbert County, according to the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.

Roberts was arrested in Anderson County shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, officers said.

Anderson County sheriff’s public information officer Stephen Combs said Elbert County deputies contacted Anderson deputies with information that Williams may be at a house in Honea Path, S.C. Several deputies went to the house and arrested the suspect, who surrendered without incident, Combs said.

The body was taken to the State Crime Lab for an autopsy, Elbert County authorities said.

Deputies went to home at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday and found the victim, but who called the 911 center for help wasn’t released.
