Athens tree service worker falls to his death

A 57-year-old Athens man was killed Wednesday afternoon when he fell while cutting limbs on a tree in the 600 block of Holman Avenue, Athens-Clarke County police said.

John Curtis Conaway, a Parkway Drive resident, was working for a tree service that had been hired to clear trees to make way for a house the property owner planned to build, according to police.

Conaway fell nearly 80 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner, according to police.

A police report of the incident noted that Conaway had secured himself to a tree limb with a safety rope, but as he was cutting, the limb came down and pulled him to the ground with it.
