Athens-Clarke County police on Thursday asked for the public’s help in locating a man who followed an 11-year-old girl Saturday afternoon and offered her a ride.

The suspect allegedly followed the girl when she left BP/Circle K on Prince Avenue at about 4 p.m. When he offered her a ride the girl declined, police said.

Police released surveillance video images of the man from the store with the hopes someone might recognize him so that police can speak with him.

“Detectives are looking to speak to this individual to determine what his intent was when he both followed and offered a ride to a minor,” said Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez.. “While following someone and offering them a ride is not illegal, it is a cause for concern because of her age.”

Anyone who recognizes the man in the photographs should call Athens-Clarke County police Detective Chuck Ivey at (706) 613-3888, ext. 789, or email him at charles.ivey@athensclarkecounty.com.
