Alleged peeping Tom in Athens charged for related incidents

Patrick Joseph McElroy

A Madison County man who already was in jail for a peeping Tom incident last week was charged with the same offense for an incident that happened on Willow Street four months earlier, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Patrick Joseph McElroy, 30, of Colbert was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly taking photographs of a 19-year-old University of Georgia student through her bedroom window at Towne Club apartments in the 200 block of Springdale Street, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Her friend and neighbor called the victim to alert her that a man was taking pictures through the window and the victim ran into another room to call 911, police said. During a search of the victim’s complex, police said they found McElroy hiding in the trunk of his car.

After the suspect was in custody, detectives linked him to the alleged earlier peeping incident and other offenses at Towne Club and on Peabody Street.

On Monday, police charged McElroy with an additional count of peeping Tom, plus first-degree burglary, loitering or prowling, and obstruction of law enforcement officers. He was being held without bail at the Clarke County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
