Registration open for Clarke County sheriff’s motorcycle ride

Clarke County Sheriff Ira Edwards

Clarke County Sheriff Ira Edwards is sponsoring his 17th annual Charity Motorcycle Ride on Oct. 21.

The ride begins at 1 p.m. at Cycle World of Athens, 4225 Atlanta Highway, Bogart.

This year the ride also honors the memory of retired sheriff’s Lt. Lucious White, who died in August. He was a 21-year-veteran of the sheriff’s office and served as a watch commander at the jail at the time of his retirement.

Registration for the ride will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The fee is $35 per bike and includes a T-shirt, meal and door prizes. Bikers will travel to Madison in Morgan County and back to Athens.

Sheriff’s administration technician Rena Durie said proceeds from the ride benefit the office’s DARE program, but this year will also benefit the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes.

Edwards, who was elected sheriff in 2000, has sponsored the ride every year since.

People can go to the sheriff’s website and download an application, or fill one out on the day of registration, according to Durie.

For more information, call the sheriff’s office at (706) 613-3250.
