3 injured in Athens nightclub shooting

Three men were injured Sunday morning at an Athens nightclub, one critically, when one of the patrons opened fire with a handgun, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The critically-injured man was shot once in the chest, and on Sunday afternoon remained on a ventilator at a local hospital, according to police. Another man’s shoulder was grazed by a bullet during the shooting at The Venom Club, but his injuries were said to not be life-threatening.

A third man was injured when he fell amid the mayhem caused by the shooting and suffered cuts to his legs, according to police.

Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, said he knew of no motive for the shooting and did not know if investigators had identified any suspects.

The Venom Club occupies the same building at 1700 Commerce Road that formerly housed Country Rock Café. It reportedly had an overflow crowd Saturday night and Sunday morning because the featured act was the up-and-coming Atlanta rap star known as Lil Baby.
