Athens police continue search for suspect, clues in hotel murder

Athens-Clarke County police continue searching for a Florida man who allegedly shot his wife to death last weekend in their room at the Best Western hotel on North Milledge Avenue.

And they continued searching for any possible motive Alexander Thomas Devanna would have for killing Casey Devanna, the 32-year-old woman to whom he had been married for less than a month.

What brought the couple to the westside Athens hotel was also being investigated by police.

Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, said none of the other guests at Best Western heard the gunshot that killed the woman, nor did they hear any arguing from the room.

Casey Devanna’s body was found Sunday afternoon by hotel housekeeping staff.

The cause of the woman’s death was determined to be a fatal gunshot wound during an autopsy Wednesday at the State Crime Lab, according to police.

Police obtained a murder warrant for Alexander Devanna on Thursday.

Police believe Alexander Devanna was driving a red Hyundai Santa Fe bearing Florida Tag AE2296, and had possibly already returned to Florida, where police said he had contacts in St. Petersburg, Orlando and Daytona Beach.

A Crime Stoppers reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information about this case is asked by police to contact Detective Timothy Conner at timothy.conner@athensclarkecounty.com, or call him at (706) 613-3888, ext. 337.
