Athens-Clarke County police on Thursday announced they have obtained a murder warrant for a Florida man who allegedly shot and killed his wife last weekend in their room at a westside Athens hotel.
Authorities named Alexander Thomas Devanna as the suspect in the shooting death of Casey Devanna.
The cause of the 32-year-old’s death was determined to be a fatal gunshot wound during an autopsy Wednesday at the State Crime Lab, according to police. Her body was found Sunday afternoon by cleaning staff at the Best Western on North Milledge Avenue, police said.
Police believe Alexander Devanna was driving a red Hyundai Santa Fe bearing Florida Tag AE2296.
Alexander Devanna is possibly back in Florida. Police believe he has contacts in St. Petersburg, Orlando and Daytona Beach.
The Devannas had been married for only a month, according to police, who said they did not yet know any possible motives for the killing.
“There were no witnesses, no reports from anyone that they heard an argument in the room, and we’re unsure if they were having any marital issues,” said Epifanio Rodriguez, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. “That’s all being investigated as we speak.”
A Crime Stoppers reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information about this case is asked by police to contact Detective Timothy Conner at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call him at (706) 613-3888, ext. 337.
