A gas leak that caused traffic to be detoured on a main artery through downtown Athens has been repaired.
The leak was created when construction equipment ruptured a gas line on Oconee Street between West Broad and Wilkerson streets Tuesday morning, according to police. The leak was repaired and Oconee Street was reopened in a little more than an hour, according to a Nixle alert.
Members of the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department remained on the scene until a utility repair crew arrived and fixed the leak, while police officers directed traffic to detours around the affected area.
The leak did not result in any evacuations of nearby apartments, businesses or other buildings said Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez evacuated.
