The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old boy at his home Wednesday to determine if it was an accident or self inflicted.
Deputies went to the boy’s home on Avalon Court in Winder about 2:40 p.m., where they found him inside the residence. Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services personnel were subsequently called to the scene. The youngster was flown by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he died Wednesday night. The boy’s name has not been released.
“We’re doing forensic interviews with students and teachers to see if there are any indications as to why it happened or how it happened,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Thursday. “We should know something (by Friday) based on our investigation.”
