Shooting, stabbing punctuate fight in Broadacres

One man was shot and another was stabbed Thursday afternoon when they fought at the home of a woman who was the former girlfriend of one of the men and the current girlfriend of the other man, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m.at the Broadacres public housing complex when 21-year-old Trevious Omar Bugg went to his former girlfriend’s apartment there to gather some of his belongings, police said.

Soon after arriving, Bugg got into an altercation with the woman’s current boyfriend, 24-year-old Steven Walton. During the struggle, Bugg reportedly pulled a handgun and shot Walton in the thigh, according to police. Walton grabbed a box cutter from a kitchen table and cut Bugg several times in the face in self-defense, police said.

When the fight began, the 18-year-old girlfriend retreated into another room. When she heard the gunshot, she called 911, police said.

She told police Bugg ran from the apartment, bleeding from his neck and holding a handgun prior to getting into a pickup truck and driving away.

In the meantime, Walton ran to West Broad Street and tried to flag down people to help him, then returned to the apartment where he collapsed, police said. His girlfriend wrapped a towel around the injured thigh, but blood was oozing through the makeshift bandage when police arrived. Walton was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A short time later, police said, they responded to St. Mary’s Hospital on a report that Bugg had shown up at the emergency room with knife wounds to his face.

An investigation conducted by detectives determined that Bugg was the primary aggressor. After being discharged from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, battery and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
