Statham man charged with murdering wife outside Auburn supermarket

Darrin R. Russell

A Statham man remained in the Barrow County Detention Center without bond Monday on a charge of murdering his wife in the parking lot of the Ingles grocery store parking lot off Atlanta Highway in Auburn.

The suspect, Darrin Rossell Russell, 50, is charged in the shooting death of his wife Dorothy Russell, 51.

Officers were dispatched to the location about 5 p.m. Friday following a 911 call about a domestic dispute, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

An Auburn police officer who arrived found Dorothy Russell in her vehicle, officers said. She died at the scene.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said deputies received a description of the vehicle in which Darrin Russell left the scene and found him at a church. He was taken into custody without any problems, Smith said.

Officers have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.

The Auburn Police Department requested that the GBI investigate the slaying.
