SAVANNAH, Ga. | The St. Patrick’s Day parade may be over, but the party is still going strong in Savannah.

Bars, restaurants and souvenir shops on the city’s downtown riverfront were counting on more healthy crowds Saturday, the final day of Savannah’s annual St. Patrick’s Day festival.

Thousands of gaudy green revelers packed Savannah’s sidewalks and oak-shaded squares Friday for the city’s 193-year-old parade. Irish immigrants to the Georgia coast held their first March 17 procession here in 1824.

Since then, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration has ballooned into Savannah’s most lucrative tourism event of the year as well as one of the South’s biggest street parties after Mardi Gras.
