A 13-year-old student at Madison County Middle School was arrested Tuesday after he was found in possession of a loaded pistol in school, according to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office report.
A sheriff’s school resource officer took the teen into custody after school administrators learned the student was in possession of the .380-caliber pistol, authorities said.
The student had “bragged” about having the firearm in the presence of other students, who reported the matter to officials, deputies said.
An investigation indicated the teen “took the firearm from a vehicle belonging to his parents without their consent or knowledge,” according to the report.
The teen was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and released to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Deputies said there was no indication the firearm was brandished in the school or that anyone was threatened by the suspect.
The matter is still under investigation, Capt. Jimmy Patton said Tuesday.
