Get ready for tugging and mud at Camp Hooray

Extra Special People of Watkinsville will hold its third annual Big Trail &Tug event on Sept. 17 at Camp Hooray in Jefferson.

The Big Trail and Tug is a family event featuring food, games, a 5-K trail run, family Mud Run and tug-of-war competition. The camp is located on Strickland Lane off Jefferson River Road south of Jefferson.

“The trails at Camp Hooray are beautiful and a fun change of pace for the avid runners in our community. Additionally, it’s such an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon for those who want to walk and just support an incredible organization like ESP,” Trail Chair Mary Pat Manfredi said .

Individuals can participate throughout the day, volunteer at the eventvor come to watch and cheer on participants as they test their strength and endurance. Tuggers will also be joined by local community leaders, policemen and firefighters from Jackson and surrounding counties.

At the end of the day, awards will be presented to the best-dressed and strongest teams.

The Mud Run offers an opportunity to engage the whole family in a service-minded afternoon. The Mud run is appropriate for all ages and allows a family to work together to complete obstacles while also supporting individuals of all abilities.

The event also gives the community an opportunity to visit ESP’s Camp Hooray. The funds raised will support programs at Camp Hooray, which officials say will one day be the first fully-accessible camp built from the ground up.

The facility has already hosted outings and camps.

“You truly get to experience the passion ESP’s supporters have for the organization, its mission and the individuals it serves. ESP never limits its individuals, and they ask their community to similarly challenge themselves. You certainly wouldn’t see these supporters hopping in the mud for anything but ESP,” said Lorie Petersen, who chairs the tug event.
