New to the Athens community and still recovering from her recent fight with breast cancer, Linda Leito was looking for additional support.
Since joining Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center’s breast cancer support group, she can’t imagine life without her fellow breast cancer fighters and survivors.
“I was diagnosed in 2013 and finished my treatment the following year,” said Leito, who moved to Jackson County shortly after finishing her treatment. “Even though my fight with breast cancer is over, there are still days when I don’t even want to get out of bed.”
Leito found the support she needed through Piedmont Athens Regional’s breast cancer support group, where women in the Athens and surrounding communities gather to share their stories and aid each other in their breast cancer journeys.
The Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, where the support group is housed, offers a number of free services and programs for cancer patients and their family members.
The breast cancer support group meets the second Wednesday of each month. The group is open to women who are newly diagnosed, currently undergoing treatment, or have completed treatment.
“I would go to the group every day if I could,” Leito said. “I learn new things about the breast cancer journey every time I go, and even though I’ve only known some of the other group members for a short time, I feel like we’re a group of sisters getting together and bonding.”
