Elle: After two decades in Hollywood, controversial Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (“Basic Instinct”) returned to Europe in 2006 and has been making movies there ever since. In his latest psychological thriller, Isabelle Huppert (“The Piano Teacher”) plays a business executive who plots revenge after surviving a vicious assault in her home. Huppert’s performance earned a 2017 Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Playing exclusively at Athens Cine. 2 hr. 11; R.
Kong: Skull Island: Ignoring Peter Jackson’s 2005 epic “King Kong,” this new film is intended as a prequel to the 2014 version of “Godzilla” and a lead-in to a battle between the two classic monsters. Set in 1971 and patterned after “Apocalypse Now,” Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers”) leads a group of former US soldiers on an expedition to catch the giant ape. Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, and John Goodman co-star. 1 hr. 58; PG-13.
The Salesman: Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi (“The Past”) won this year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for this thrilling drama about a teacher (Shahab Hosseini, “A Separation”) who attempts to find the person responsible for a violent attack on his actress wife (Taraneh Alidoosti, “About Elly”). The title is a reference to Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” which figures heavily into the plot and themes of Farhadi’s film. 2 hr. 5; PG-13.
