Kenimer 65th Anniversary

In 1950, the cost of a loaf of bread was 14 cents, a gallon of gas was 20 cents, and on Friday, June 26th, Edward Kenimer and Betty Tarpley were married in Athens, Georgia. Lifelong residents of the Oconee and Clarke County area, both Edward and Betty are graduates of Oconee County High School, Edward in 1946 and Betty in 1947. After marriage, they lived in Athens and Bishop and have now been residents of Watkinsville for over 30 years.

Recently, over 60 friends and family came to share stories and photos at a lively, laughter-filled barbeque lunch in the Fellowship Hall at the High Shoals Christian Church. The color for the 65th anniversary is sky blue, and this was the theme of the day from the table settings to the cake and flowers.

When asked what the secret is for 65 years of marriage, Edward said, "I never forgot the power of saying yes - and being hard of hearing didn't hurt either." To which Betty said, "I knew from the time we were in High School, I wanted to marry him, and I can never imagine him not being in my life."

Both said they could not believe they have been married 65 years. Plans are already being made for the 70th anniversary.
