Police: Athens woman says unsecured hood caused crash

A 24-year-old Athens woman was arrested for alleged impaired driving Wednesday night after she crashed her SUV into a parked car on Marlborough Downs Road, Athens-Clarke County police said.

She told police the accident occurred when the hood of her vehicle, which had been tied down with a rope, flew open and obstructed her vision, according to police. She said she was eating ice cream out of a bowl at the time and that she re-secured the hood with rope following the crash.

The woman appeared unsteady on her feet and spoke erratically, police said, and she said that earlier that night she had taken something that had been prescribed by her doctor. After failing roadside sobriety tests, she was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, distracted driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, no proof of insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle.
