UGA student victim of check fraud

Athens-Clarke police responded Wednesday to report of a University of Georgia student who had fallen victim to an email phishing scam.

According to the police report, the student received an email from someone claiming to live in Athens who needed a house sitter while they were out of town.

The victim was sent a check via FedEx for nearly $2,400 and told to deposit $200 in his account for payment and the remainder into a different account, the report read.

According to the report, the check was a forgery, and student was a victim of a scam.
