Athens woman victim of identity theft

Athens-Clarke police received a report Wednesday from an Athens woman claiming to be the victim of identity theft.

According to the report, the victim realized her identity had been stolen when she applied for a credit card and was denied due to low credit rating. She thought that was strange, because she had no other credit cards or accounts.

After having her credit checked, she realized that someone used her name, Social Security number and a similar birthday to open an account with Sprint Communications, Gwinnett Medical Center and North Metro Radiology Service, the report noted.

In total, more than $3,600 in debt was charged to the victim’s name.
