Athens-Clarke police responded Monday to a report of a counterfeit check being cashed at Classic Cash on West Broad Street.
According to a police report, the suspect came in to cash a check for just under $10,000, claiming he had recently sold his car to a used car lot in Athens.
The attendant on duty called a number for the lot he found on Google, and the individual who answered the phone said the suspect was in rightful possession of the check.
The report notes that the number the clerk called also matched the number on the check provided, so the check was cashed.
The Classic Cash worker later found another phone number for the business, and when he called, there was no record of a vehicle having been sold to the suspect, the report read.
When the original number was called again, it had been disconnected.
