Athens man arrested after allegedly spitting on woman

An Athens man was arrested downtown Saturday night after allegedly yelling obscenities and spitting on a woman.

 

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, Harshad Deven Patel, 24, was in front of the Mellow Mushroom on Clayton Street making derogatory comments about women.

One witness, who was a woman, turned and asked Patel if he was talking to her. According to the report, Patel spit on the woman and said, “You’re a …woman; I don’t respect you.”

Patel then left the scene and a witness followed him while calling 911, the report reads.

Athens-Clarke police officers made contact with Patel in front of The Classic Center.

According to the report, officers noticed the Patel was under the influence of alcohol and he was placed under arrest and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
